CIRCADIAN RHYTHM

Circadian Rhythm have an EP out shortly. It’s called “Fortunes” and it features four songs. At its heart the EP covers themes of inspiration: finding it, other people offering it, and what you do once you’ve got it.
It’s most clearly there in “Start Again” (the clue’s in the title) with its nod of the riff to “Shortnin’ Bread”: “I take pride in searching things I need so hard to find/So I will start again”.
As befits most bands exploring similar themes, there’s much talk about the weather and natural phenomena. Songs about ambition and desire for change are always ridden with references to staring at roads and gazing at sunsets and the like.
And Circadian Rhythm are no different. The EP’s title track features the misty eyed line of “I can’t help but look outside this window” while “9” talks dreamily of “just another weekend break in the sun/as we write our names in the sand”.
But “Fortunes” is hardly a chill out EP. For that kind of thing you’ll need to check out other Kentish acts like Belleville, Letou or Lo and the Beholds. I know I have.
While there is much talk on Circadian Rhythm’s EP of inspiration, dreams and ambitions, it’s all from a position of not being quite there yet – as is so often the case in the world of rock ‘n’ roll lyrics.
Which is where the storm and stress comes in. For all the talk of love letters in the sand and lazy sunny afternoons, Circadian Rhythm matches these idyllic references with hurricanes (“Carry Me Home”) and “shakes and earthquakes” (“Fortunes”) which jeopardise the peace and “waking up to success” you‘ll find in “9”.
All this is done against a backdrop of Foo Fighters meets Kings of Leon rockiness: a crowd pleasing sound with crowd pleasing themes. This is lighter waving stuff – or backlight-on-your-mobile waving stuff – with a bit of crowd surfing thrown in for the adventurous.
It’s a good, solid sound from a good, solid band. If you like your rock impassioned but easy on the ear, give them a listen.
